My Photography Policy

As my Urban Planning students and I discussed last week, my policy on using photography or illustrations of any kind in assignments is that the work should either be your own or something you have a license to use. That’s why we covered Flickr and Creative Commons last week.
Well, a thought occurred to me during my own photography research earlier this week, which is that another batch of photographs you have a limited license to use is National Archive material. You can search the Library of Congress, and specifically the American Memory Collection, to find a lot of really fascinating images and material. Maps, photographs, many many things to explore. The entire HABS collection is there under Built in America (link in the bar on the right as well).
Take a look at the Reproduction Rights and necessary attribution information before you use it, but much of it is public domain (or close enough for a school paper).
Comment here if you have questions or other ideas for sources.

Interpret THIS!

Here’s one to challenge all of my classes.
Asian “Atlantis” Shows Strange Structure {http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/09/photogalleries/japan-pictures/photo2.html}
For the Intro folks - is this world heritage? Does your answer change based on whether or not it’s cultural or natural?
For Senior Seminar - how would you interpret this? And if it turns out it IS “Atlantis”?
For Urban Planning - …. I got nothing.
Have a great Fall Break everyone.
See you next week. - Prof. McS

Grading… done.

Well, not all of it. :)
Intro and Senior Seminar students - your projects are graded, posted, and should be available for you to download. If you have questions, I have office hours today and next Thursday 10:30-12.
Urban Planning students - they’re coming! Expect them next Wednesday or Friday.

On another note, the podcast interpretation site I was recommending in Sr. Sem is SoundAboutPhilly.com - not SoundS.

Best - Prof. McStotts
